The Name of Jesus!

Scripture reading for May 8th:  Acts 3

As the new group of believers was empowered on the day of Pentecost, it grew rapidly with the new power to witness indwelling the disciples.  New believers were added on a daily basis to the growing church.  (Acts 2:47)  The church continued to meet in the temple and be a part of the Jewish system.  This was soon to change!

Peter and John were going to the temple for the time of prayer at 3:00 in the afternoon.  They encountered a crippled man who was begging at the gate.  “When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.  Peter looked straight at him, as did John.  Then Peter said, “Look at us!”  So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.  The Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you.  In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”  Taking him by his right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.  He jumped to his feet and began to walk.  Then he went into the temple courts, walking, jumping, and praising God.”  (Acts 3:3-8)

Many people gathered as a result of the healing of this man.  Peter again addressed the crowd and explained how God had glorified Jesus!  “You killed the author of life, but God raised Him from the dead.  We are witnesses of this.  By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong.  It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.”  (Acts 3:14-16)  Peter confronted the people.  He called them to repentance and faith in the name of Jesus!

No Other Name!

Scripture reading for June 6th: Acts 4:1-37

From the beginning of man’s history, he was to exercise authority in using names.    (Genesis 2:19-20)  God gave Mary the name for their supernaturally conceived son through the angel Gabriel.  (Luke 1:30-32) “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.  You will be with child and give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name ‘Jesus’.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” The name of Jesus was to be special and powerful.

“On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise Him, He was named ‘Jesus’, the name the angel had given Him before He had been conceived.”(Luke 2:21)   His Name would be linked to perfect obedience of God’s law and He would be the salvation of His people Israel as well as the world!

Jesus gave His name to His disciples as a gift prior to the crucifixion.  “In that day you will ask Me anything.  I tell you the truth, My Father will give you whatever you ask in My name.  Until now you have not asked for anything in My name.  Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” (John 16:22-24)  The Name of Jesus was to bring authority and the disciples were to use their own lips to ask the Father for what they needed in that Wonderful Name!

Peter and John were standing before the rulers and elders of Israel who had crucified Jesus because they had used the Name of Jesus.  These rulers asked the disciples, “By what power or what name did you do this?”  “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people!  If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raise from the dead, that this man stands before you healed!” (Acts 4:7-10)

The name of Jesus is like no other name!  “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)  Have you taken the name of Jesus for your own?

Healing in Jesus’ Name!

Scripture reading for June 5th: Acts 3:1-26

Although they were now believers in Jesus Christ, Peter and John continued to go to the temple to pray.  On their way to pray, they came across a man who was crippled from birth who was begging for alms.  This man had probably been there for years.  But on this day, this man was going to get more than he was looking for.  As he called out to Peter and John for some money, they called for the man to look at them.

“Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you.  In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”  Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.  He jumped to his feet and began to walk.  Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping and praising God.” (Acts 3:6-8)  Peter spoke simply to this man.  He had no money but he did have something more valuable, the name of Jesus Christ!  He gave this man that Name in authority, commanding him to walk.  Peter by faith took him by the hand and helped him up.  As the man rose up, the miracle took place!  Can you imagine the joy and amazement in the man and these disciples!

The healing of this man drew a crowd in the temple around the man and Peter and John.  Peter seized the opportunity to preach the Gospel!  “You killed the author of Life, but God raised Him from the dead.  We are witnesses of this.  By faith, in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong.  It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has given this complete healing to him, as you all can see.” (Acts 3:15-16)  Peter spoke directly to the ones who had crucified Jesus and confronted them with their evil deed and the Gospel.

Peter then called on them to repent.  “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that He may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you–even Jesus.” (Acts 3:19-20) All men need healing for sin has crippled us from birth!  Call on Him today!
