Spreading the Aroma of Christ!

Scripture reading for July 30th: 2nd Corinthians 2, Psalm 1, Proverbs 27 (using Psalm 1 today to switch to using odd-numbered Psalms for balance of year.)

Key Scriptures: 2nd Corinthians 2:14-17  “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere.  For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life.  Who is sufficient for these things?  For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s Word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.”

Paul likened his life to that of a conquered prisoner being led by a conquering king.  He was in a triumphal procession and where ever he was led, he and his fellow believers manifested the sweet fragrance of Christ Jesus.  This fragrance brought salvation and life to those being saved, but it brought death to those rejecting the message.  Paul and his companions did nothing for money or fame, but as those commissioned by God, they spoke in Christ by the Holy Spirit.

Faith Confession:  I have been conquered by Christ Jesus and He leads me each day in triumphal procession, manifesting His sweet fragrance to those around me.  I pray for salvation and life as people  make decisions that will affect them for eternity.

Psalm 1:5-6  “Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

The Fragrance of Life!

Scripture reading for July 30th:  Psalm 55-57, 2nd Corinthians 2

Key Scriptures: 2nd Corinthians 2:14-16 “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere.  For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life.  Who is sufficient for these things.”

Paul was writing to the Corinthians for the second time.  He described the Church of Jesus Christ as a triumphal victory procession, lead by the Savior.  All who had been won over by the Savior’s love and grace, followed willingly.  Their lives radiated the fragrance of Jesus Christ, His love and His sacrifice on the cross to save sinners.  Those who saw and believed were saved and came to life eternal.  Those who rejected, went on to eternal death.  What an amazing picture!

Psalm 57:9-11 “I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations.  For Your steadfast love is great to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds.  Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!  Let Your glory be over all the earth!”

Prayer:  Thank You Lord for your great love and faithfulness to me.  May Your fragrance flow from my life today to bring salvation to the lost.  Amen.

We are the Fragrance of Christ!

Scripture reading for July 29th:  2nd Corinthians 2

Key scriptures for over-comers:  2nd Corinthians 2:14-17  “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.  For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.  And who is equal to such a task?  Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.  On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.”

Paul, a man who was conquered by Christ, pictured himself and other believers as those led in a triumphal victory procession by their conqueror King.  As they were led, these believers spread the fragrance of their conquering King among those along the way.  To those who would be saved, the fragrance of Christ was the smell of life eternal.  To those opposing Christ, they smelled like death.   To God the Father, the believers were the fragrance of Christ Himself!  Paul was not a hireling but a bond-slave of the Lord Jesus.  Believers are sent or led by Christ in victory on their journey through this world to their glorious inheritance!

Observations for over-comers:  Not everyone will love us as we are led by Christ, but we smell sweet to God! “How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride!  How much more pleasing is your live than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice.  Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, by bride’ milk and honey are under your tongue.  The fragrance of your garments is like that of Lebanon.”  (Song of Songs 4:10-11)

Preachers that smell!

Scripture reading for August 28th: 2nd Corinthians 2:9-17

Paul was a man sent by God to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  He had a personal encounter with Christ on the Damascus Road that turned his life around.  He was filled with the Holy Spirit and sent out by a confirming prophetic word to take the Gospel to the Gentiles.  He also loved his own brothers, the Jews, and preached in synagogues everywhere.  He wasn’t always received with open arms and some were hostile to the message he presented. Others welcomed the message and were gloriously saved.

Paul described his ministry to the Corinthians. “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.  And who is equal to such a task?  Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.  On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.” (2nd Corinthians 2:14-17)  Paul was led by Christ to the places he should preach.  Even when it did not look like a victory, Paul knew the scope of his calling and that Christ would give him victory.  Some would hear and receive and his message would be the fragrance of life.  Others would not hear or receive and to them his message would smell like death and produce conflict.  Paul’s job was to preach the message and leave the results up to God.  He was only a servant of Christ, sent by Him to humbly share.

God has commissioned each of us to go into our world and preach the Gospel to every creature.  (Matthew 28:18-20)  Those who hear and believe will be saved and given eternal life.  Those who refuse to hear and reject the Gospel will be damned.  The call to us is to obediently preach, leaving the results up to God.  Each person must respond!  Who is adequate for this ministry?  Christ works with us and He brings the fragrance of life to all who will hear!  He wants none to perish in death, but all to receive His glorious gift of life!  What a wonderful God we serve!
