Walking in the Light!
Scripture reading for November 19th: 1st John 1
The apostle John was an eyewitness of Jesus Christ. He walked with Him, talked with Him and had put his head on His chest, hearing His heart. John was proclaiming to the Church what he knew to be true so that they would not be deceived by false teaching that was spreading throughout the early church about a generation after the resurrection of Jesus. The truths taught in this letter ring true for us today!
“This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1st John 1:5-7)
The false teachers were proclaiming a gospel of cheap grace. They were teaching the people that they could be saved and still live in sin. John stated plainly that God was light. Those who walked in God’s light could not continue to live in sin. If they did, they were lying about having a relationship with God. Those who walked in the Light would experience a continual cleansing from sin through repentance and confession. Otherwise they would be living in self-deception and darkness! “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will for give us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1st John 1:8-9) Believers walk in Christ’s light and live humble lives of honest repentance!
