Manifestations of the Spirit!
Scripture reading for July 22nd: 1st Corinthians 12
“Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.” (1st Corinthians 12:1) Paul was concerned about the use of gifts in the Corinthian church. There were indications that the church members did not understand the gifts and why God had placed them in the different members of the body. Paul wanted the church to be well educated about the gifts.
Our God is alive and active in our world and His church. Many of the Corinthian believers had come out of idolatry and their idols were mute–they never spoke! Now the Living God had placed His Spirit in them and gifts of speaking came forth. One of the first indications of the Spirit of God speaking in a believer is their declaration, “Jesus is Lord”. (1st Corinthians 12:3) No one speaking by the Spirit will ever curse Jesus or God!
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. The are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1st Corinthians 12:4-7) Even though there are different gifts, God the Father, Jesus the Lord, and the Holy Spirit are the same. They work through their gifts to help and encourage the body of Christ. There are speaking gifts of words of wisdom, knowledge, prophesy and tongues and interpretation of tongues. There are gifts of healing, miraculous powers and supernatural faith to trust God. There is also the ability to discern spirits that may be operating in opposition to the work of God. “All these are the work of the one and same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines.” (1st Corinthians 12:11)
